08/17/2022 -- Huge Congratulations to former Hibel Lab member Andrea C. Buhler-Wassmann!!! Dr. Buhler-Wassmann graduated with her PhD in Human Development from UC Davis in 2022 and is currently working as a full-time Postdoctoral Associate in Dr. Gigliana Melzi's research lab in the Institute of Human Development and Social Change (IHDSC) at New York University. She is continuing to focus on cultural and family influences on children’s early learning and development as part of the Ciencia en Relatos project funded by the "Collaborative Research: Latinx Families’ Talk about Science with Young Children” grant (NSF# 2055382). Congrats, Andrea! We will miss you but we are super excited for your next steps!
06/06/2022 -- Congrats to Nahui Gonzalez Millan, undergraduate at CSU Stanislaus who works in the Hibel lab, for a fantastic poster presentation at the 2022 Western Psychological Association Conference.
09/01/2021 -- After spending the last year and a half conducting the project completely remotely, we are excited to say that we are finally conducting some of our visits in person on campus! We are following all campus COVID-19 precautions (vaccination, testing, masking) in addition to some extra precautions to increase the safety of the visits: enhanced cleaning, additional air ventilation and filtration, and gifting task toys to participants to reduce reusing toys.
08/16/2021 -- The Hibel lab will be presenting two posters at the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology annual conference. Chase Boyer will present “Maternal affect regulate infant average cortisol output and day to day fluctuations in a Mexican-Origin population” and Andrea Buhler-Wassmann will present “Acculturation, socioeconomic status, and sleep in Mexican American mothers of infants.”

We know that low income families are particularly vulnerable during this time. That is why we will be examining the effects of the pandemic on these families' mental and physical health and well-being. In particular we will be examining buffers of the pandemic's impact. To support these efforts we received an internal grant from UC Davis.

08/03/2017 -- Fantastic news! Our NICHD R01 grant 'Adversity and Socialization of Self-Regulation in Chronically Stressed Children' was FUNDED!! This grant aims to identify mechanisms by which early adversity impacts children’s development of self-regulation such that they have trouble cooperating, following directions, controlling impulses, and managing upsets. Using a Mexican origin sample (a group that is growing at a remarkable rate yet surprisingly under studied) this study also aims to uncover cultural buffers of this developmental process.
